what is commonest, cheapest, nearest, easiest, is Me.

after a long, long time of not posting anything new, i have to apologize. i haven't been carrying a camera around so i keep missing opportunities to take photos of people looking good. by the way, to the three girls standing in line at bodo's last friday around 10:45, i really liked your outfits. so please wear that same exact thing some time when i have my camera, k?

so in place of not having any pictures to show you, i decided to write a post dedicated to my style inspiration for fall. i've been digging the baggy button down shirt, tucked in, with a lazy ease in my posture. like one that says, yeah i'm awesome because i defined american poetry as we know it.

i'm hoping the "walt whitman" trend will catch like wildfire. it's relatively easy to do. i went to the thrift store yesterday and bought everything that screamed "WALT!" (which was weird because that's not my name. and clothes shouldn't talk). so participate the WW trend of Fall 2010. it's inexpensive and carefree. just remember, any time you pause: left hand in your pocket, right hand resting on your hip, cock head to the side, slightly tilt hat, and sing your body electric.

a plea

hey all,

as some of you have noticed (and gently reminded me), i have not posted any new photos since last week. there are many reasons behind this with the most salient being that lugging around a nice heavy camera is hard, and i'm a delicate, frail creature who likes to complain about back pain. so last week, there were tons of people with awesome outfits on, but alas i had no camera. and yes, i wrote a million missed connections ads on craigslist pining for your sweet ensembles.

well then here we are. i've been thinking of a way to make up for days/weeks that i don't snap pictures. a solution (and a plea): so in the spirit of collaboration and my laziness, i want you to send me some photos! if you happen to see someone (friends and/or strangers) looking particularly nice--trust me, it's a great way to meet new people--, be a guest photographer on my blog! Or if you wake up one morning and decide that the world's your runway, open up your photo booth and take some pictures of yourself!

anyone willing to help me out should send me at least 3 photos. photo quality doesn't matter. in fact, i dig the lo-fi, camera phone thing.

thanks for looking good,
nica

Q: what's black and white and read all over?

A: this blog post! or yolanda's awesome outfit. i read somewhere recently that black and white is a major trend this fall. which made me think: black and white, trendy? come on fashion world! i think we decided a while back that black and white were classic colors. because that's how the world looked in old movies. you know, like in classic movies before people could see in color. geeze.

but seriously, black and white has always been a favorite color combination of mine, especially with a pop of color. more points if the pop of color happens to be in a bouquet of roses.

i guess if you don't trust my fashion forecasting, check this out for monochromatic looks for the fall.

not a confederate hat

i love learning new things. for example: this past weekend, i found out what is believed to be the first sentence in english ("this she-wolf is a reward to my kinsman"), how detrimental to schoolwork photos from NY fashion week are, and what type of hat coogan is wearing in the photos below.

for those who don't know, coogan is sporting a kepi, or "a cap with a flat circular top and a visor (american english) or peak (british english). etymologically, the word is a borrowing of the frence képi, itself a respelling of the alemannic käppi: a diminutive form of kappe, meaning 'cap'".

whoa! i just learned two more new things in that very trustworthy description: the british call visors "peaks" (like "beaks"?) and the fascinating origins of the word "cap".

thanks coogan and wikipedia for expanding my hat knowledge!

downtown diversion

so this post is not necessarily dedicated to street style but to the street--main street, that is. mia and i went on an adventure yesterday to the downtown mall, and everything was perfect. a used car graveyard, a hot dog stand, a long conversation with a toy store owner, and cupcakes were involved. charlottesville, i love you.

also, i figure it's time to warn you guys that since the weather is finally starting to cool down, i will be wearing these high-wasted skinny james jeans at least once (if not twice) a week. and i have them in two different washes. and that is why this is a street style blog, not a see-me-wear-the-same-jeans-everyday blog.

coming soon: posts of people looking good from our downtown adventure!

rock on

i never know what to do with concert tees because they're always some weird length made from baggy men's t-shirts, and i'm usually forced to buy a youth large which ends up shrinking and becoming a belly shirt circa jennifer love hewitt, 1995. and sure, i can buy the girl's version, but for some strange reason, people who make concert tees seem to think that girls like tight spaghetti strap tank tops and/or tight baby tees circa jennifer love hewitt, 1995.

so what all of that ranting really means is that i appreciate when i see people pull off concert tees effortlessly like caroline below. not only am i jealous that she got her shirt from bonnaroo (it's always: "oh i'll just go next summer"), but i also love how she put her outfit together with a denim skirt. and nothing wins my heart over like denim does.

inadvertent advertising

lunch is my (second)* favorite meal for many reasons:
1. luncheoning makes me feel like a real adult because only adults go on lunch dates/breaks and get to say things like "let's do lunch",
2. lunch food,
3. lots of other people eat lunch so it's easy to run into people eating lunch and looking good.

case in point: i love anjali's baggy button-down shirt and subtle-ruffle skirt combo. perfect for lunch (and for the rest of the day).

*brunch is my favorite meal. but i'll have to tell you why in a later post if brunch seems like a relevant topic (and it often is in my life). or if you can't wait to know why, just ask me.
